The Ehsaas Program was the name Pakistan’s federal government gave its social protection programmes from 2019. Since 2022, those programmes have carried Benazir names again and run under the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP). This guide explains what happened to Ehsaas, what each old Ehsaas programme is called now, how to check your status by CNIC on 8171, and how to stay safe.

Millions of people still search for “Ehsaas program 8171”. The name has changed, but the check has not: you still use your CNIC on 8171, and it is still free.

What happened to the Ehsaas Program?

Ehsaas was never a single payment. It was a brand that grouped many federal programmes together. Here is the short history, from official pages and national newspapers:

So “Ehsaas” is an old name. The support behind it did not simply disappear. The main cash, school and nutrition programmes continue under BISP, with new names. Some Ehsaas schemes, such as the 2020 emergency cash, were one-time and have ended.

The Ehsaas name was dropped in 2022. You now check the same support as BISP, by CNIC on 8171.

If someone mentions an Ehsaas programme, this table tells you what it is called today and where to read more:

The Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety, which oversees BISP, also lists Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal, the Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund and the National Poverty Graduation Programme. Those are separate from the BISP cash programmes and have their own rules.

How to check the Ehsaas Program by CNIC

Because the old Ehsaas cash support is now BISP, you check it the BISP way. There are two free methods:

  • Online: open 8171.bisp.gov.pk, enter your 13-digit CNIC without dashes, type the captcha and press check.
  • By SMS: send your 13-digit CNIC, without dashes, to 8171 from any mobile.

Your result usually shows one of these:

  • You are eligible, and a payment is due
  • You are eligible, but no payment is ready yet
  • You are not eligible under the current survey data
  • Your CNIC is not found, which means your household needs the NSER survey

Who is eligible now

The programmes once called Ehsaas now follow BISP rules. Eligibility is not decided by the check tool. It comes from the survey:

  • Your household must be registered in the NSER (National Socio-Economic Registry).
  • Your household must have a qualifying PMT poverty score. BISP’s official Kafaalat page gives the cut-off as 32, or 37 for families with a person with a disability.
  • Kafaalat is paid to women of eligible households.
  • Government employees and better-off households are generally not eligible.

How to register

As of September 2026, there is no online self-registration for new BISP applicants, under the Ehsaas name or any other. You register in person:

  1. Go to your nearest BISP Tehsil office.
  2. Take your CNIC, the CNICs of adult family members, and B-Forms for children.
  3. Complete the NSER dynamic survey there. It is free.
  4. Check your result later by CNIC on 8171.

How the money reaches you in 2026

The payment method has changed since the Ehsaas years. According to an APP report from June 2026, from July 2026 all BISP payments go through digital wallets in the beneficiary’s name, and more than 8 million free Benazir SIMs had already been given to women for this. Two rules keep your money safe:

  • Withdraw it yourself. Never hand your phone, SIM or card to an agent.
  • Never share an OTP or PIN, even with someone who says they work for BISP.

Punjab’s own programmes are separate

If you live in Punjab, remember there are two different systems. BISP (the old Ehsaas support) uses the federal NSER survey. Many of Punjab’s own schemes, such as the Rehmat Card and the Nigehban Ramzan package, select families from the Punjab Socio-Economic Registry (PSER) instead. You may also see “Ehsaas” attached to Punjab programmes on other websites. Around 2020, the Punjab government ran its own provincial Ehsaas drive, and APP reported in November 2020 that the Ba-Himmat Buzurg pension was part of it. Today the Punjab Social Protection Authority lists its programmes under their own names, such as Humqadam and Sila-e-Fun, and our Ba-Himmat Buzurg guide explains that pension’s current status. They are Punjab programmes, not BISP, and 8171 shows your BISP status, not theirs.

Stay safe from fraud

Because “Ehsaas” is an old but famous name, many fake websites and messages still use it.

  • 8171 is the only official number for checking BISP status. There is no separate Ehsaas number.
  • A website with “Ehsaas” in its name that offers registration, or asks for money, is not official. Official BISP pages end in bisp.gov.pk.
  • Checking and registering are free. Never pay an agent to “add your name”.
  • Never share your OTP, PIN or password with anyone.
