A marriage certificate online in Punjab is the computerised Marriage Registration Certificate (MRC) that your Union Council issues after your nikah is registered. This guide explains who does what, the ways to apply (including the partly online ones), the documents, the fee, and why NADRA will ask for this certificate later.

Most problems start with a nikah nama that was never properly registered. Checking that first saves a lot of trouble when you need the certificate for NADRA, a B-Form or a visa file.

How a marriage certificate online in Punjab works

There are three parts to the process:

  1. The Nikah Registrar records the marriage on the nikah nama and registers it with the Union Council.
  2. The Union Council (or Municipal Committee) keeps the record and issues the computerised Marriage Registration Certificate. Punjab’s Local Government Department says in its FAQ that the concerned Union Council or Municipal Committee issues this certificate.
  3. NADRA provides the Civil Registration Management System (CRMS) that Union Councils use. NADRA does not issue the MRC itself, but it asks for it when you update your marital status.

Step 1: Make sure the nikah is registered

The certificate can only come from a registered nikah. ProPakistani reported in September 2026 that Punjab’s Local Government Department has tightened the rules for Nikah Registrars:

  • They must complete the marriage registration within seven days of the nikah and send the record to the Union Council.
  • They may only register nikahs held within their own area.
  • New registrars must be able to use the internet and a mobile phone.

Before you leave the nikah, check that every column of the nikah nama is filled in and that you get your copy. If months have passed and the Union Council has no record, go back to the Nikah Registrar first.

Step 2: Apply for the computerised certificate

You have three ways to apply:

  • At the Union Council. Either spouse can go. According to ProPakistani (May 2026), staff check your documents, enter the details in the official system and give you a proofreading printout. You check it and sign, and the Union Council issues the certificate after final verification.
  • At an e-Khidmat Markaz. In May 2026 the marriage certificate service started at 15 e-Khidmat Markaz centres, open 9 am to 5 pm, ProPakistani reported. The e-Khidmat helpline is 1317, or toll-free 0800-09100.
  • From home through Dastak. The Dastak Citizen App lists Marriage Certificate as a doorstep service. A facilitator collects your papers and brings back the certificate. See our Maryam Ki Dastak guide or call 1202.

What about a fully online route? ProPakistani reported in May 2026 that NADRA’s digital marriage certificate service in the PakID app was available only in selected areas, including Chakwal and Nankana Sahib in Punjab, and Quetta and Karachi East elsewhere. Outside those areas, plan on one of the routes above.

Documents you need

The Local Government Department’s FAQ lists:

  • A copy of the nikah nama, duly registered by the Nikah Registrar
  • The CNICs of the husband and wife
  • Copies of their parents’ CNICs

News reports in May 2026 also listed copies of the witnesses’ CNICs. The e-Khidmat Markaz adds an application form and the applicant’s CNIC, asks for originals plus copies attested by an officer of grade 17 or above, and says it accepts applications only where the nikah was registered since 2001. For an older nikah, ask your Union Council.

The fee and how long it takes

A Dastak doorstep visit adds its own service charge. Fees can change, so confirm the amount at the counter and always get a receipt.

After the certificate: update NADRA

Once you have the MRC, a few NADRA records depend on it:

  • Your CNIC. NADRA’s PakID FAQ says a marital status change needs proof, such as a Union Council marriage certificate. Our NADRA CNIC online guide explains how to apply in the app.

Divorce certificates

A divorce is registered at the Union Council or Municipal Committee where the nikah was registered, according to the Local Government Department. It asks for written statements and documents such as the court order or the Union Council chairman’s papers. The Dastak Citizen App also lists Divorce Certificate as a doorstep service.

Common problems and what to do

  • The Union Council has no record of your nikah. The Nikah Registrar has not registered it yet. Go back to the registrar with your copy of the nikah nama.
  • Your nikah was registered before 2001. The e-Khidmat Markaz will not take the application, so apply at the Union Council where it was registered.
  • NADRA still shows you as single. Apply for a CNIC modification in the PakID app or at a NADRA centre, with the MRC as proof.
  • A child’s B-Form is refused. NADRA’s record of your marriage is probably missing. Update it first, then apply again.

Stay safe from fraud

  • The certificate comes only from your Union Council. Anyone selling a “NADRA marriage certificate” outside official channels is not genuine.
  • Use only the Union Council, an e-Khidmat Markaz, a facilitator booked in the Dastak Citizen App, or NADRA’s PakID app where it is offered.
  • Pay only the official fee against a receipt, and never share an OTP or password.
  • Report bribe requests or delays on the Pakistan Citizen’s Portal.
